Towel bar vs towel hook

Hooks win on space and on published ratings. Bars win on the only job that matters after a shower: getting the towel dry.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

A towel hook and a towel bar on a bathroom wall

The short answer

Use a bar for a bath towel you need dry by morning, and a hook for a robe, a wet swimsuit or a child’s towel. Hooks are the ones with numbers: Delta gives its Cassidy double hook 20 lb, and publishes no capacity at all for its towel bars.

A robe on a rental wall or doorSafe

Drying versus storing

A towel dries from its surface. Over a bar, most of that surface meets moving air; on a hook, the towel folds against itself and the inside stays damp for hours. That is the whole case for bars, and it is why a bathroom with hooks only tends to smell. Musty towels are covered here.

A hook is for things you are storing rather than drying: a robe between showers, a swimsuit on its way to the balcony, a child’s towel they can actually reach.

Only hooks publish a number

  • Delta Cassidy double robe hook: 20 lb, per Delta’s answer on the page.
  • Delta Dryden double robe hook: “5 lbs”.
  • 3M Command water-resistant strips: 3 lb (medium), 5 lb (large).
  • Drilled towel bars: no published capacity, from any maker we have found.

That absence tells you what bars are for. Nobody expects a towel bar to carry a load, and it is certainly not a substitute for a grab bar — Moen and Delta publish 500 lb for those.

Wall space

The Cassidy bar is 26-1/2 in. wide assembled and stands 4-17/32 in. off the wall. The matching hook is 2-1/2 in. wide and 3-7/8 in. deep. In a small bathroom that difference decides what is physically possible — a hook fits beside a door frame or on the back of the door, where no bar will go.

Height, and the one published rule

The ADA Standards do not set a towel bar height, but they do set one for hooks: “Coat hooks shall be located within one of the reach ranges specified in 308.” Those ranges are 48 in. maximum and 15 in. minimum above the floor for an unobstructed forward or side reach.

In a family bathroom that is a useful lower bound too: a hook at a child’s height is the one they will use, and it keeps their towel off the floor.

Fixing: the part that fails

Both formats fail at the wall rather than in the middle. Delta’s published advice for its accessories is plastic or lead anchors in tile, and toggle bolts in plaster or drywall where there is no wood blocking. A hook concentrates its load on one small plate, so the anchor matters more per hole than it does on a bar. Drilled against adhesive is compared here.

What to put where

The arrangement that works in most bathrooms: a bar within reach of the shower for bath towels, a hook behind the door for robes, and a ring or a small bar by the basin for hand towels. Bar against ring is the other half of this question.

If you rent

Both Delta pieces rate Ask first on our install rating — fillable holes, but holes. The Command bar and hooks rate Safe. The robe hooks we rank are here, and the no-drill bars are here.

1. The bar

Cassidy 24 in. Towel Bar

Delta · 79724 · best for drying a bath towel spread out

Completely brass, 26-1/2 in. assembled, with a template, hardware and Delta's anchor advice.

Delta’s Cassidy 24 in. towel bar is the format that dries a towel, because a towel folded over 24 in. of rail has most of its surface open to the air.

Delta publishes “Completely brass construction”, “Mounting hardware and mounting template included with product”, and anchor guidance for tile and drywall. What it does not publish is a weight capacity — which is true of every drilled bar we have found.

Renter verdict: Ask firstIt comes off cleanly, but it touches something a landlord may care about.

Why: Screwed into the wall with anchors or toggles. The holes can be filled, which makes it a question for the landlord rather than a flat no.

What’s wrong with it

It needs about 26 in. of clear wall and two sound fixing points, and it was out of stock on Delta's store when we checked.

Delta Cassidy Double Robe Hook

2. The hook

Cassidy Double Robe Hook

Delta · 79735 · best for robes, swimsuits and narrow walls

A double hook Delta gives a 20 lb load, 2-1/2 in. wide and 3-7/8 in. from the wall.

The matching Cassidy double robe hook takes a tenth of the wall — Delta publishes “4-5/8 in. H x 3-7/8 in. D x 2-1/2 in. W” — and it is the only drilled item in this comparison with a published load: 20 lb, given by Delta in its answer to a question on the product page.

Two hooks on one plate also means two things hung where a bar would hold one towel badly.

3. The no-drill bar

Command Bath Hand Towel Bar

3M Command · BATH41-SN-ES · best for renters with a hand towel

A 9 in. bar on water-resistant strips 3M rates at 3 lb and 5 lb.

The Command Bath hand towel bar is the renter’s bar. 3M rates the medium water-resistant strip at 3 lb and the large at 5 lb, publishes the method — clean with rubbing alcohol, press for 30 seconds, “wait 1 hour before use” — and a stretch-release removal.

At 9 in. it is a hand-towel bar, not a bath-towel bar. Size it honestly.

4. The no-drill hook

Command Bath Hooks with Water-Resistant Strips

3M Command · Command Bath range · best for a robe on a rental wall or door

The same 3 lb and 5 lb strips behind a hook, with a published removal that takes no paint.

Command Bath hooks are the fastest upgrade in a rental bathroom: no drill, no cure smell, and 3M’s removal instruction is simply to “always pull straight down”.

3M’s own placement rule matters more than people think: choose a spot where the strips are not bridging a grout line. The full method is here.

Questions people actually ask

is a towel bar or hook better

A bar dries a bath towel better because more of the towel is exposed to air. A hook takes far less wall and is the only format with published load ratings: Delta gives its Cassidy double hook 20 lb.

how much weight can a towel hook hold

Delta gives its Cassidy double robe hook 20 lb and its Dryden 5 lb; 3M rates the Command water-resistant strips behind its adhesive hooks at 3 lb and 5 lb.

how high should a towel hook be

The ADA Standards place coat hooks within their reach ranges — 15 inches minimum to 48 inches maximum above the floor. Lower is better for children's towels.

can you dry a bath towel on a hook

It will dry eventually, but slowly, because the towel folds against itself. If towels in your bathroom smell, a bar or a heated rail is the fix.
