The best shower benches
This is the one bathroom purchase where an unpublished specification should end the conversation.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

The rule for this category
We apply the same standard here that we apply to grab bars, and it is stricter than anywhere else on this site: if the manufacturer does not publish a weight capacity, we will not recommend it.
A shower bench takes the full weight of a wet adult, sometimes suddenly, on a slippery floor, in a room full of hard edges. The failure mode is a fall in the worst possible place. That is not a category where an unstated specification can be inferred from the photographs.
A great deal of this market is unbranded marketplace product with no published rating at all, or a rating stated in a listing bullet with no manufacturer document behind it. We are not ranking those, and we would suggest you do not buy them.
The same logic is why we refuse to recommend no-drill grab bars anywhere on this site.
Why teak, specifically
Teak dominates this category and it is not just aesthetics. It has a naturally high oil content, which is why it has been used for boat decks for centuries — it tolerates repeated wetting and drying without warping or rotting in the way most timbers do.
For a shower that matters twice over. The bench spends its life wet, and the failure you cannot see is water getting into joints and fixings.
Which is why the hardware specification is worth as much attention as the wood. Marine-grade stainless steel screws, as Teakworks4u publishes, resist the corrosion that ordinary steel suffers inside wet timber. A bench with good wood and cheap screws fails at the screws, from the inside, without warning.
Teak does need occasional oiling to keep its color; left alone it weathers to silver-gray, which is cosmetic rather than structural. Teakworks4u publishes no care instructions, which is a genuine gap on a product that needs some.
Freestanding versus fold-down, and the renter line
Freestanding benches stand on the shower floor and attach to nothing. They rate Safe on our install rating, and they are the only format a tenant can use.
Fold-down wall seats are the format you see in hotels and accessible bathrooms. They save floor space and they are anchored into structure — studs or blocking behind the tile, not plasterboard fixings. That is a proper installation by someone who knows what is behind the wall, and it is emphatically not a renter project.
We do not cover fold-down seats on this site for exactly that reason. If you own the home and need one, this is a job for a contractor and it should be treated like installing a grab bar.
Measure the enclosure first
A bench is a large permanent object in the smallest room in the house, and the published footprint is 25 by 14 inches.
Check the door swing. A pivot shower door sweeps a large part of the tray. A bench in that arc means the door will not close.
Check you can still reach the controls from a seated position. If the point of the bench is to shower sitting down, being unable to reach the mixer defeats it.
Check the spray reaches you. Sitting puts your head roughly two feet lower than standing, and a fixed head aimed at a standing adult sprays over the top of a seated one. This is the single most common disappointment with a shower bench, and the fix is a handheld on a hose. The handheld picks are here, and a two-in-one keeps the fixed head as well.
A bench is not a substitute for a grab bar
Worth saying plainly, because the two get bought together and confused.
A bench supports you while you are seated. It does nothing while you are lowering yourself onto it or standing up from it, which are the moments a fall actually happens. It is not designed to be pulled on sideways, and a freestanding bench will slide or tip if you use it that way.
If sitting down and standing up is the difficult part, what you need is a properly anchored grab bar fitted into structure, and that is a job for someone who can find the studs behind the tile. A bench is a comfort and endurance aid; a grab bar is a safety fixture. They are not interchangeable.
Every pick in full
1 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Best overall
25 x 14 Heavy Duty Teak Rigid Bench
Teakworks4u · PTB-2514HD · best for a published load rating you can actually rely on
A published 500 lb capacity on a 25 x 14 x 18 in teak bench with marine-grade stainless steel screws.
The Teakworks4u heavy duty teak bench is the pick for one reason above all others: it publishes what it will hold.
Teakworks4u states a “500-pound weight capacity”. On a product whose entire job is supporting a wet adult, that figure is not a marketing detail — it is the specification, and most of this category does not print one.
The construction backs it up. Published “marine-grade stainless steel screws”, 1-1/4″ x 1-1/2″ legs and “high-quality waterproof wood glue”. Marine-grade fixings matter in a shower because ordinary steel screws in wet timber corrode from the inside, and you cannot see it happening.
Dimensions are published at 25″ L x 14″ D x 18″ H. Eighteen inches is close to standard chair height, which is what makes standing up from it manageable. There is a removable shelf, optional adjustable feet, and it is “Made in the USA”.

Why: It is assembled once and then stands on the shower floor. Nothing is fixed to a wall, which is the whole reason a freestanding bench is available to a tenant when a fold-down seat is not.

What’s wrong with it
It occupies 25 by 14 inches of shower floor permanently, which a small enclosure cannot spare. Teak also needs occasional oiling.
What we can’t tell you
Teakworks4u publishes no teak grade, no care instructions and no warranty — and it showed limited stock at the time of writing.

The one to skip
Dorai Home Large Bath Stone (Alta)
Dorai Home · Large Bath Stone — Alta · best for standing on, which is a completely different job
An excellent bath mat that gets mistaken for shower furniture — it is a floor surface, not a seat.
The skip on this page is a warning rather than a comparison, and it is worth making explicitly.
The Dorai large bath stone is a genuinely good product and we rank it on the bath mat page. It is a diatomaceous earth panel that evaporates water rather than holding it.
It is not a seat, a step or a support of any kind, and it is not sold as one. It has no published load rating for a seated adult because that is not what it does, and a rigid mineral panel is exactly the sort of thing that fails suddenly rather than gradually.
We include it because “shower stone” and “shower stool” get confused in search, and because the general principle deserves stating: in a wet room, do not sit or stand on anything whose maker has not published a weight rating for that use.

Questions people actually ask
what weight can a shower bench hold
It depends entirely on the maker, and most of this category does not publish a figure. Teakworks4u publishes a 500 lb capacity on its heavy duty teak bench. If a maker does not publish a rating for a product that carries a wet adult, we would not buy it.
is teak good for a shower bench
Yes — it has a naturally high oil content and tolerates repeated wetting and drying without warping or rotting. Just check the hardware too: marine-grade stainless screws resist the corrosion that ordinary steel suffers inside wet timber.
can you put a shower bench in a rental
A freestanding one, yes — it stands on the shower floor, attaches to nothing and leaves nothing behind. A fold-down wall seat has to be anchored into studs or blocking behind the tile, which is not a tenant's change to make.
do you need a handheld shower head with a shower bench
Almost always. Sitting puts your head about two feet lower than standing, and a fixed head aimed at a standing adult sprays straight over a seated one. It is the most common disappointment with a bench and a hose fixes it.
