The best bathroom upgrades for seniors
Seven upgrades, ranked by the fall each one prevents. Most go in over a weekend, and several need no tools at all.
By Sawyer V. · · How we research

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What we judged these on, in order
Falls are the reason this page exists. The CDC’s figure is stark: “More than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor.” The bathroom concentrates the conditions for it — wet hard floors, a step over a tub wall, and getting up and down from low seats. So every pick below was chosen against the same five questions, in this order:
- Which fall does it prevent? Stepping into the tub, standing in a wet shower, getting up from the toilet, or the trip in the dark. An upgrade that prevents none of those does not belong here, however comfortable it is.
- Is it rated for a person’s weight? Anything you might grab or sit on needs a published rating. The grab bar, bench and raised seat here publish 500 lb, 500 lb and 350 lb.
- Does the maker publish the number that matters? Load for a bar, suction and surface for a mat, lift and locking for a seat, cord length for anything electric. We rank on what is published, and say what is not.
- How is it installed? A grab bar has to go into structure; a mat, bench, seat and night light need no fixings at all. Each pick carries our install rating.
- Will it keep working without effort? A magnetic dock the head finds on its own, a seat that locks rather than slides, a light that turns itself on. Anything that relies on remembering tends to stop being used.
The order to do them in
If you are doing this for a parent, or for yourself, you do not need all seven at once. This is the order we would work through them, cheapest and most protective first where the two coincide:
- A non-slip mat in the tub and a firm mat outside it — MedlinePlus also says to “Use a non-skid bath mat outside the tub for firm footing” and “Keep the floor outside the tub or shower dry.”
- A grab bar at the tub or shower entry. The single most important fixture, and the only one here that needs drilling.
- A night light in the bathroom and on the way to it.
- A raised seat if standing up from the toilet has become a push.
- A bench and a handheld head once showering standing up is tiring or unsteady. They work as a pair.
- A bidet seat if reaching has become the hardest part.
One free step belongs at the top of the list and costs nothing to buy: MedlinePlus advises you “Set the temperature on your water heater to no more than 120°F (49°C) to prevent burns.”
Grab bars: where they go, and what never to use instead
The ADA Standards give the published height for grab bars in accessible bathrooms: “Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position, 33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface.” They also set the strength benchmark — a bar and its fixings must withstand 250 pounds of force — which the 500 lb Moen rating clears twice over.
MedlinePlus adds the practical rules for a home: bars “should be secured vertically or horizontally to the wall, not diagonally”, and two are usually needed — one for getting in and out of the tub, another for standing up from a seat. It is equally blunt about the shortcut people take: “Do not use towel racks as grab bars. They can’t support your weight.” Why a towel bar is never a substitute is covered here.
Toilet height: know the number before you add to it
The ADA sets accessible toilet seats at “17 inches (430 mm) minimum and 19 inches (485 mm) maximum measured to the top of the seat”. A raised seat adds 4.5 to 5 in. to whatever you have now, so measure first: on a standard-height toilet it lands near that range, on a comfort-height toilet it may go well past it. Comfort height against standard height is compared here.
What we left out, and why
Walk-in tubs, curbless showers and new toilets are real solutions and they are remodels, not upgrades — plumbing, tile and often permits. This page is for what goes in over a weekend.
Suction-cup “grab bars” are left out for the reason in our skip: a bar whose own maker does not rate it for a person’s full weight is not a grab bar, whatever the packaging says.
Anything without published data is left out on principle. There are many shower chairs, rails and mats on sale that publish no capacity, no dimensions and no surface limits; we cannot rank what nobody has stated.
Prices, roughly
The mat and the night light are the least expensive items here and the fastest to fit. The grab bar, handheld head and raised seat sit in the middle. The bench and the bidet seat are the larger purchases. Current prices appear beside each pick, pulled live from Amazon rather than typed in by us.
If you rent, or are helping a parent who does
The mat, bench, handheld head, raised seat and night light all rate Safe on our install rating: nothing is fixed to the property. The bidet seat rates Ask firstbecause it needs an outlet near the toilet. The grab bar rates Owner-only, because it has to be anchored into structure — but it is also the one to ask the landlord for, and how to ask is covered here.
Every pick in full
7 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. The first upgrade
Home Care 16 in. Concealed Screw Grab Bar, Stainless
Moen · 8716 · best for getting in and out of the tub or shower
Rated to 500 lb, ADA compliant, 1.25 in. stainless — the one fixture here built to hold a person.
If you do one thing on this page, fit a grab bar where the step over the tub wall or into the shower happens. Moen’s 8716 Home Care grab bar “supports up to 500 lbs.” and “complies with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications”.
It is 16 in. long, 1.25 in. in diameter — a size a hand can close around — in “stainless steel construction”. Moen’s SecureMount fixing is published for installation “at any angle on the wall, with or without studs”, and it carries a limited lifetime warranty.
A 16 in. bar is the right length for the entry point. For a long run beside a tub, the site’s grab bar page covers a 42 in. option from Delta.

Why: A grab bar has to hold a falling adult. It is drilled and anchored, and we treat that as a job for an owner or a professional who knows what is behind the tile.

2. Best for the tub floor
28 in. x 16 in. Bath Mat
Vive Health · LVA1017M · best for standing in a wet tub or shower
Latex-free rubber with 116 suction cups and a ribbed top, machine washable, 60-day guarantee.
The second most useful thing costs the least. MedlinePlus is specific: “Put non-slip suction mats or rubber silicone decals in the bottom of your tub to prevent falls”.
The Vive Health bath mat is “Latex-free rubber”, 28 x 16 in., with “116 strong suction cups hold the bath mat securely in place” and a ribbed surface. Vive publishes it as resistant to mold and mildew, washable in cold water, and backed by a 60-day guarantee.

3. Best for sitting to shower
25 x 14 Heavy Duty Teak Rigid Bench
Teakworks4u · PTB-2514HD · best for anyone who tires or feels unsteady standing
A freestanding teak bench published at a 500-pound capacity, 18 in. high, made in the USA.
MedlinePlus puts it in one line: “Sit on a bath chair or bench when taking a shower.” The TeakWorks4U heavy-duty teak bench publishes a “500-pound weight capacity”, 25 x 14 in. of seat at 18 in. high, and “marine-grade stainless steel screws”.
Optional adjustable feet let you level it on a sloping shower floor, and assembly needs only a screwdriver. Because it stands rather than fixes to the wall, it works in a rental too.

4. Best partner for the bench
Moen Engage Magnetix Handheld Shower, 3.5″ head
Moen · 26100 · best for showering seated
A handheld head on a 60 in. hose with a magnetic dock, six spray settings, lifetime warranty.
A bench only works if the water can reach you sitting down, which is what a handheld head is for. Moen’s Engage 26100 publishes a “60″” hose and “Includes Magnetix Docking System” — the head drops back into its cradle without anyone lining up a clip with wet hands.
It has six spray functions, a 3.5 in. head, and a limited lifetime warranty. It replaces the existing head on the shower arm with one wrench. Shower heads for seniors are ranked here.

5. Best for the toilet
PreserveTech Secure Lock Raised Toilet Seat
Drive Medical · RTL12C003-WH · best for standing up from the toilet
Adds 5 in., locks at three points, carries 350 lb, with padded arms that adjust or come off.
Sitting down and standing up is the other daily risk, and MedlinePlus names the fix: “Raising the toilet seat height can help prevent falls. You can do this by adding an elevated toilet seat.”
Drive Medical’s PreserveTech Secure Lock adds 5 in., carries 350 lb, and locks with “Three locking points of security located on the front, left and right side”. The padded arms give something to push on and come off for sideways transfers, and it goes on with “No Tools Required!” The raised seats are compared here.

6. Best for the trip at night
GE Motion-Select LED Night Light
GE (Jasco) · 58559 · best for finding the bathroom in the dark
Dusk-to-dawn with a motion boost to 40 lumens at a warm 3000K, and off after 90 seconds.
The night-time trip is the one taken half awake, in the dark, often in a hurry. GE’s Motion-Select LED night light glows low from dusk and offers “Motion-Boost Mode (brightness increases from low to high when motion is detected)”, up to “40 lumens max” of soft white 3000K light.
It “turns OFF after 90 seconds” without motion and plugs into any outlet. Put one in the bathroom and one on the route to it. The bathroom night lights are compared here.

7. Best for limited reach
Brondell Swash SE400 Bidet Toilet Seat
Brondell · Swash SE400 · best for anyone for whom wiping has become difficult
A heated seat, warm-water wash, dryer and side controls — with a published 120V supply and 4-foot cord.
For many people the hardest bathroom task is not getting in or out — it is reaching. Brondell’s Swash SE400 replaces the toilet seat with one that washes and dries, with a heated seat, a “tank heating system” for warm water, an adjustable warm air dryer and an “intuitive side-arm control panel”.
It publishes “120V / 60Hz” and a 4-foot cord, so you can check the outlet before you buy, and a “simple, DIY installation”. Bidets for limited mobility are compared here.

The one to skip
12 in. Transitional Decorative ADA Grab Bar, Stainless
Delta · 41712-SS · best for a steadying hand, never a full-weight grip
Sold as an ADA grab bar, but its own listing says it is not designed to support a person's full weight.
This skip is about reading the whole listing, not just the title.
Delta’s 12 in. 41712-SS is sold as an “ADA Compliant” grab bar, and it publishes that it assists individuals “weighing up to 500 pounds”. The same page then says “Assist Bars are not designed to support the total weight of an individual”.
A bar that is only meant to steady you is the wrong bar for the one moment a grab bar exists for: a slip, when your whole weight lands on it at once. Buy a bar whose maker publishes a full-weight rating, like the Moen above.

Questions people actually ask
what bathroom upgrades help seniors the most
A grab bar where you step into the tub or shower, a non-slip mat in the tub, a shower bench with a handheld head, a raised toilet seat, and a night light for the trip in the dark. MedlinePlus recommends grab bars, non-slip suction mats, an elevated toilet seat and a bath chair or bench.
can a towel bar be used as a grab bar
No. MedlinePlus says plainly: do not use towel racks as grab bars — they can't support your weight. Moen publishes 500 lb for its 8716 grab bar; towel bars publish no rating at all.
how high should a toilet seat be for a senior
The ADA sets accessible toilet seats at 17 to 19 inches from the floor to the top of the seat. Raised seats add 4.5 to 5 inches, so measure the existing height before choosing one.
what temperature should a water heater be set to for an older adult
MedlinePlus advises setting the water heater to no more than 120°F (49°C) to prevent burns. It is free, and it belongs at the top of any bathroom safety list.
