The best shower upgrades

Seven upgrades to the shower you already have, judged on what each one publishes. Not one of them needs a drill.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Delta In2ition Two-in-One Shower, 1.75 GPM

The short answer

The upgrade that changes a shower most is the head: Delta’s In2ition puts a fixed head and a hand shower on one arm at a WaterSense 1.75 GPM. Then add a certified filter if your water is chlorinated, storage that stands on its own, a shower mirror and a tub mat. None of the seven needs a drill.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

What we judged these on, in order

The shower is used every day, and the EPA puts a number on how much water it takes: “Showering is one of the leading ways we use water in the home, accounting for nearly 17 percent of residential indoor water use—for the average family, that adds up to nearly 40 gallons per day.” So an upgrade here should change that daily shower, not the look of the room. Every pick was judged against five questions, in this order:

  1. Does it change the shower you take every day? Spray, water, storage or footing. Decorative swaps that leave the shower itself the same are not on this list.
  2. Does it publish its flow rate, and where does that sit? Anything that water runs through is placed against the 2.5 GPM standard and the 2.0 GPM WaterSense limit.
  3. Does it fit the shower you already have? One threaded joint on the shower arm, spring tension, suction or grip. Nothing here needs a drill, and each pick carries our install rating.
  4. Can you check what it claims? A WaterSense label, an NSF/ANSI 177 test, a stated warranty, a published surface limit. Where a maker is silent, the pick says so.
  5. What does it cost to keep? Only the filter has a running cost, in cartridges. Everything else is bought once.

Start with the head

A shower head connects to the arm on a standard thread. High Sierra’s head, for example, “Connects to shower arms, extensions, filters, etc with universal 1/2″ - 14 NPS or NPT male threads size”. That is why a head swap is the most useful shower upgrade there is: one joint, one wrench, and the old head goes in a drawer. How to replace a shower head is covered here.

If your complaint is weak pressure, work through the free fixes before you buy anything — descaling the head and checking that the shut-off valve is fully open come first, and no head contains a pump. The pressure fixes are here, and why removing the flow restrictor is the wrong fix is here.

Flow rate, in plain numbers

The EPA sets out the two figures that matter: “Did you know that standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute (gpm)?” and “Water-saving showerheads that earn the WaterSense label must demonstrate that they use no more than 2.0 gpm.” By its estimate, “The average family could save 2,700 gallons per year by installing WaterSense labeled showerheads.”

A lower number is not a promise of a weak shower. WaterSense testing includes spray force, which the EPA says “Ensures showerhead spray force (or ‘pressure’) is sufficient to provide user satisfaction”, and spray coverage, so the stream is not too narrow or too wide. Placed on that scale, the picks here run:

  • Delta In2ition: 1.75 GPM, WaterSense labeled.
  • High Sierra Classic: your choice of 1.25 to 2.5 GPM; the 1.25, 1.5 and 1.8 are WaterSense.
  • Moen Engage 26100: 2.5 GPM maximum, the standard figure.
  • Aquasana AQ-4100: 2.5 GPM, which Aquasana publishes as the filter’s flow rate.

What GPM means on a shower head is explained here.

Filters: what the certification covers

NSF/ANSI 177 is the standard written for shower filters, and it tests one thing: how much free chlorine a filter removes, held across the capacity the maker claims. Aquasana’s over 90% for 10,000 gallons is that kind of claim, and it is why the AQ-4100 is here and filters with no certification are not. NSF/ANSI 177 is explained here.

Two things it is not. It is not a test for chloramine, which some cities use instead of chlorine — whether shower filters help with chloramine is answered here. And it is not softening: no shower filter does what a water softener does, as the shower water softener question explains.

What we left out, and why

New valves and trim, including thermostatic valves, sit behind the wall and are a plumber’s job. They are worth knowing about — what a thermostatic valve does is here — but they are not an upgrade you fit on a Saturday.

Glass shower doors hang on jambs fixed to the shower walls, which makes them owner’s work. The sliding doors are ranked here.

Shower panel systems get their own verdict: are shower panels worth it.

Vitamin C shower filters are left out because none we found publishes a certification like the Aquasana’s. The vitamin C question is answered here.

A heated shower floor is the skip above, for the reason given there: it goes in under new tile.

The order to do them in

  1. The head. The two-in-one if you want both a fixed head and a handheld; the High Sierra if you want to cut water use; the Moen if a handheld alone will do.
  2. A filter, if your water is chlorinated and it bothers you. Choose it at the same time as the head, because the Aquasana comes with its own wand.
  3. A tub mat, for a tub with a smooth floor.
  4. Storage, once the tub edge fills with bottles.
  5. A shower mirror, if you shave.

Prices, roughly

The shower mirror and the tub mat are the least expensive picks here. The Moen handheld and the High Sierra head sit in the next bracket, the Aquasana filter above them, and the Delta two-in-one and the simplehuman caddy are the larger purchases. The filter is the only one that keeps costing, with a new cartridge every 10,000 gallons or six months. Current prices appear beside each pick, pulled live from Amazon rather than typed in by us.

If you rent

All seven picks rate Safe on our install rating. The heads and the filter thread onto the existing arm, so keep the old head and screw it back on the day you move. The caddy stands on spring tension, the mat is suction, and the mirror grips and peels off. Nothing is fixed to the building. Shower heads for apartments and rentals are ranked here.

Every pick in full

7 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Delta Delta In2ition Two-in-One Shower, 1.75 GPM

1. The biggest single upgrade

Delta In2ition Two-in-One Shower, 1.75 GPM

Delta · 58480-BL-PK · best for a fixed head and a handheld on one arm

A fixed head and a hand shower in one unit, WaterSense labeled at 1.75 GPM, on a 60 in. hose.

If you change one thing, change the head, and this one does the work of two. Delta’s In2ition Two-in-One Shower is a fixed head and a detachable hand shower on the same arm, on a hose Delta publishes as “Includes 60 in. hose”. A hand shower is the useful half: it rinses the tub, washes a dog, and lets you shower sitting down.

Its published flow is “1.75 gpm @ 80 psi, 6.6 L/min @ 552 kPa”, and it is “WaterSense Labeled”. The spray settings are “H2OKinetic spray, Full Body spray, Full Spray with Massage, Massaging spray” plus a pause, and Delta describes H2Okinetic as a spray that “creates wave pattern for enhanced coverage”. It “Installs in minutes” on the existing shower arm.

Against a 2.5 GPM head, 1.75 GPM works out to about 2,190 gallons a year less for one daily eight-minute shower; the arithmetic is on the card. Fixed against handheld is compared here.

2. Best for saving water

High Sierra Classic Fixed Showerhead (FCS-100)

High Sierra Showerheads · FCS-100-CH · best for cutting water use with an all-metal fixed head

One large nozzle, all metal, sold at five flow rates from 1.25 to 2.5 GPM, with the lower three WaterSense certified.

If you want a plain fixed head that uses less water, High Sierra’s Classic takes a different route from most. Instead of dozens of small jets it uses a single nozzle that works “by colliding water to create a rain-like cascade of large, heavy, high-energy droplets”.

It is sold at 1.25, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5 GPM; High Sierra lists the 1.25, 1.5 and 1.8 as WaterSense and says the head is “Independently tested and certified to WaterSense and WaterMark.” It is “SOLID LEAD-FREE and CORROSION RESISTANT METAL CONSTRUCTION”, “Engineered and built in the USA to the highest of standards using domestic and imported parts”, and comes with a wrench.

Because it comes in five flows and several finishes, the buy link opens a search rather than one listing — choose your flow rate there. The water-saving heads are ranked here.

Moen Engage Magnetix Handheld Shower, 3.5″ head

Moen · 26100 · best for adding a hand shower without a two-in-one

A 3.5 in. handheld on a 60 in. hose that docks by magnet, with six spray functions and a limited lifetime warranty.

If the hand shower is what you want and the fixed head can go, Moen’s Engage 26100 is the simpler route. It replaces the head on the arm with a cradle and a hand shower on a “60″” hose, and it “Includes Magnetix Docking System”, so the head finds its cradle without lining up a clip.

Moen lists six functions — “Wide Coverage; Downpour; Relaxing Massage; Massage; Soothing Massage; Rinse” — on a 3.5 in. head, with a limited lifetime warranty. The handheld heads are compared here.

Aquasana Aquasana Shower Filter with Chrome Handheld Wand

4. Best for chlorinated water

Aquasana Shower Filter with Chrome Handheld Wand

Aquasana · AQ-4100 (handheld wand configuration) · best for chlorinated city water

Tested to NSF/ANSI 177 for over 90% chlorine reduction across 10,000 gallons or six months, with a three-setting wand.

A filter is the one upgrade here that changes the water itself, and it only earns a place with a published certification. Aquasana’s AQ-4100 is “Independently tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 177 to reduce over 90% of chlorine” for “10,000 gallons or up to 6 months”, using “patented Copper-Zinc (KDF) and natural coconut shell media”.

This version comes with a handheld wand with “three settings: Tropical Rain, Massage, and Combination”, so it replaces the head rather than sitting behind one. Aquasana publishes a “30-80 psi” operating range, a “115°F” maximum, and a “1-Year Limited Warranty and a 90-Day Satisfaction Guarantee”. The shower filters are ranked here.

WarmlyYours TempZone Shower Mat, 120V, 32 x 32 in. with Center Drain Hole

The one to skip

TempZone Shower Mat, 120V, 32 x 32 in. with Center Drain Hole

WarmlyYours · TRT120-2.7x2.7 · best for a shower being rebuilt from the floor up

A heated shower floor goes under new tile, with an electrician's thermostat hook-up. That is a rebuild, not an upgrade.

This skip is about the job, not the product.

A heated shower floor turns up on a lot of shower-upgrade lists, and WarmlyYours’ TempZone Shower Mat is a well-documented one: 32 x 32 in. with a center drain hole, 15 watts per sq. ft., and a 25-year warranty. But WarmlyYours describes it as designed for “installation under tile and stone surfaces”, it is “Compatible with waterproofing systems”, and “a licensed electrician is recommended for the final thermostat hook-up”.

It goes into a shower that is being taken back to the floor, never into one you already have. If you are rebuilding, it belongs on the list; heated floors are covered here. If you are upgrading, every pick above goes into the shower you already have.

Questions people actually ask

what is the best upgrade for a shower

The shower head. It threads onto the existing 1/2 in. shower arm with one wrench, and it changes every shower you take. Delta's In2ition puts a fixed head and a hand shower on one arm at a WaterSense-labeled 1.75 GPM.

do low-flow shower heads have weak pressure

Not necessarily. The EPA's WaterSense label requires 2.0 GPM or less, and its testing includes spray force, to ensure the pressure is sufficient to provide user satisfaction, and spray coverage.

The best water-saving shower heads

can you upgrade a shower in a rental

Yes. A new head or filter threads onto the existing arm and the old head goes back on when you move out; a tension caddy, a suction tub mat and a grip mirror leave nothing behind. All seven picks here rate Safe on our install rating.

How the install ratings work

how often do you change a shower filter

Follow the maker's figure. Aquasana publishes its AQ-4100 cartridge for 10,000 gallons or up to six months, which is also the capacity its NSF/ANSI 177 chlorine claim is tested over.
