Tension caddy vs over-door shower caddy
This is not really a preference. Your shower allows one of these two, and the measurement that decides it takes thirty seconds.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks

Two measurements, and you have your answer
- Do you have a glass shower door? If yes, measure the thickness of the top edge and the depth of any frame on it. simplehuman does not publish a thickness range, so the only way to be confident is to compare your edge against the hanger when it arrives — and to buy from somewhere that takes returns.
- How high is your ceiling, and is it flat above the shower? The pole works between 6 and 9 ft. A sloped ceiling, a shower in a dormer, or a ceiling with a large extractor grille directly above the tub all remove the bearing point the spring needs.
Where the weight goes
This is the difference nobody mentions. A tension pole transfers its load down to the floor of the tub or tray. An over-door caddy hangs its load on the top edge of a door that swings or slides several times a day, so the bottles move every time somebody uses the shower.
Neither maker publishes a weight capacity, which is normal in this category rather than a simplehuman failing. Why no caddy publishes a capacity is covered here. The practical rule is the same either way: heavy bottles low, light things high.
What they share
- Materials. Both publish rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum.
- Warranty. Five years on both.
- Install rating. Both are Safe — no drilling, no adhesive, nothing left behind.
- Unpublished capacity. Neither states how much weight the shelves take.
Where the bottles actually go
With the tension pole you set the shelf heights, so the sensible arrangement is heavy bottles low and light things high: the lower the mass sits, the less leverage it has against the spring holding the pole up. Adjustable shelves also mean two people of different heights can each have a shelf they can reach without stretching over a wet floor.
With the over-door caddy you get one position, on the top edge of the door, and everything lives at that height. That is fine for shampoo and soap; it is poor for anything heavy, because the weight swings with the door every time somebody opens it.
What actually kills a shower caddy
Not weight — rust. A caddy spends its life in warm spray, and the cheap ones give themselves away at the welds and the screw heads within a year. Both products here publish “rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum” and a five-year warranty, which is the reason they cost what they cost. What survives a shower is covered here.
Who should skip both
A shower with a curtain and a low or sloped ceiling. Neither product has anything to hold on to. A caddy that hangs from the shower arm, or silicone-backed shelves on flat tile, is the answer instead. The no-drill caddies are ranked here.
A shower where you want a permanent shelf. If you own the place and the tile is already coming off, a niche or a drilled shelf is better than either. Niche against shelf is compared here.

2 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. For a shower with a curtain
simplehuman Tension Shower Caddy, 9 ft
simplehuman · Tension Shower Caddy 9 ft · best for a tub-shower or stall with no door to hang anything on
A spring-loaded pole between floor and ceiling with adjustable shelves, in rust-proof stainless and anodized aluminum.
simplehuman’s tension caddy carries its load to the floor. simplehuman publishes a “Reinforced aluminum tension pole with high-compression spring and grippy rubber feet”, extending from 6 to 9 ft, with shelves that “slide up or down” the pole so you can set the heights around the people using the shower.
Both products here are “Constructed from rust-proof stainless steel and anodized aluminum” with a 5-year warranty, so materials are not the deciding factor between them. Why that matters in a shower is here.

Why: The pole holds itself up with spring tension between the floor and the ceiling. There is no fixing, and the rubber feet are the only thing that touches the room.

What’s wrong with it

What we can’t tell you
simplehuman publishes no weight capacity for the shelves and no install time.

2. For a glass shower door
simplehuman Hanging Shower Caddy, Over Door
simplehuman · Hanging Shower Caddy Over Door · best for a framed or frameless door with a flat top edge
The same rust-proof materials and 5-year warranty, hanging from the door instead of the room.
The over-door caddy solves the same problem in one move: it hooks “Over Door” on the top edge of a glass shower door, with no pole, no fixings and nothing touching the tile.
It is roughly half the price of the tension pole and takes seconds to fit — and unfit, which matters if you rent. The glass-door storage options are ranked here.

Questions people actually ask
do tension shower caddies fall down
They stay up by spring compression between floor and ceiling, so the two things that cause a fall are a ceiling outside the 6 to 9 ft range and a surface the rubber feet cannot grip. Set it square and load the heavy bottles low.
will an over door shower caddy fit my door
simplehuman does not publish a door thickness range for this caddy, so measure the top edge of your glass, including any frame, and buy somewhere that accepts returns.
which shower caddy is better for renters
Both rate Safe on our install rating: no drilling, no adhesive and nothing left on the tile. The over-door caddy is the faster one to remove on moving day.
how much weight can these caddies hold
Neither publishes a figure. That is normal across the whole category, so treat the shelves as light storage and keep heavy bottles at the bottom.
