The best shower heads under $50
Under fifty dollars you are buying a spray engine and a flow rate. Everything else in the category — thermostats, brass bodies, published install times — starts higher, and the listings that pretend otherwise are the ones to walk past.
By Sawyer V. · · How we research

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What $50 actually buys
A shower head under $50 is a spray face, a swivel ball and a flow restrictor. That is the whole product. The things people imagine they are missing — thermostatic control, pressure boosting, filtration — are not in this bracket at any brand, and a listing that claims them at this price is describing a plastic insert.
So the comparison is narrow and, usefully, entirely public. Every head on this page publishes a flow rate, a spray count and a warranty. We ranked on those three and nothing else, because they are the three a reader can check against the same page we read.
The one number that matters: gpm
The EPA publishes the whole picture in two lines. The federal standard is “2.5 gallons of water per minute”; a WaterSense head must “use no more than 2.0 gpm”. Switching saves an average family “2,700 gallons per year” and “more than 330 kilowatt hours of electricity annually” — the energy number because most of what comes out of a shower head was heated first.
At 18.34 cents per kilowatt hour, 330 kWh is about $61 a year. Two of the heads on this page cost less than that, which makes the first year free and every year after it a rebate. What gpm means, and why the number is a ceiling rather than a target, is here.
Flow rate against spray feel, in one table
| Head | Published flow | Published sprays | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moen 26100EP (handheld) | 1.75 gpm | 6 functions | Limited lifetime |
| Moen 6300EP (fixed) | 1.75 gpm | 1 function | Limited lifetime |
| Speakman S-2005-HB-E2 (fixed) | 2.0 gpm | 50 sprays, 5 plungers, 3 patterns | Limited lifetime (consumer) |
| Delta 75898 (fixed) | 2.5 gpm | 8 settings incl. pause | Lifetime limited |
Read down the middle column and the page explains itself. Fewer gallons is not less shower: the Speakman pushes 2.0 gpm through fifty small jets and feels harder than a 2.5 gpm head with eight big holes. Pressure you can feel is about hole size, not volume.
Fixed or handheld at this price
At $50 the handheld is not the compromise it used to be. The 26100EP includes a hose and a dock and still comes in under the price of plenty of fixed heads. Buy fixed if you want one less thing hanging in a small shower, or if the person using it will never take it off the bracket. The format comparison in full is here.
The renter case
All four rate Safe on our install rating, and for the same reason: each one threads onto the shower arm already in the wall, with one wrench and no fixings. Keep the original head in a bag in the cupboard and the move-out is a two-minute job. How the rating is worked out is here.
Who should skip all of these
If your problem is pressure, not the head. A new head cannot add pressure that the building does not supply. It can make the pressure you have feel better by shrinking the holes, which is a different thing. Start here instead.
If your problem is the water itself. Chlorine smell and hard-water scale are not solved by any head at this price. The filtered options start here.
Every pick in full
4 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Best under $50 overall
Moen Engage Magnetix Handheld Shower, 1.75 GPM
Moen · 26100EP · best for a spray you can aim, at the lowest watersense price we can verify
Six sprays, a 60 in. hose, a magnetic dock and a published 1.75 gpm, for less than a plain fixed head from most brands.
Moen’s 26100EP is the eco-performance version of the Engage Magnetix, and the EP suffix is the whole argument. Moen publishes “1.75 Gpm (6.65 L/Min) Max.” against “2.5 Gpm” on the plain 26100, and states that it “meets EPA WaterSense® criteria to conserve water without sacrificing performance”.
Everything else is identical to the head most people buy: six functions — “Wide Coverage; Downpour; Relaxing Massage; Massage; Soothing Massage; Rinse” — on a “3.5″ Diameter Spray Head” with a “60″” hose and the “Magnetix Docking System”, which is the part that stops a handheld living on the floor of the tub.
A handheld on a magnetic dock is also the one head that makes a tub usable for washing a dog, a child or the tub itself. The tub-shower case is here.

Arithmetic on published specifications, not a measurement. Rate source: U.S. EPA WaterSense — Showerheads (2.5 gpm federal standard, 2.0 gpm WaterSense maximum).
What’s wrong with it
A 3.5 in. head is small. If you want the whole-shoulder drench of an 8 in. face, nothing in this price bracket does it.
What we can’t tell you
Moen publishes no connection size and no install time for this model, so the fitting is assumed to be the standard 1/2 in. arm rather than stated.

2. Cheapest head that still meets WaterSense
Moen One-Function Eco-Performance Shower Head
Moen · 6300EP · best for a straight swap where nobody wants to think about settings
One spray, 1.75 gpm, a 2-1/2 in. face and a limited lifetime warranty, at the lowest price on this page.
The 6300EP does one thing: Moen publishes “One-Function Full Spray” at “1.75 Gpm (6.65 L/Min) Max.” on a “2-1/2″ Diameter Spray Head”. There is no dial, no massage setting and nothing to clog on a function you never use.
That is not a compromise for everybody. In a rental where the shower is used twice a day and argued over by nobody, the setting dial is the part that breaks first. This one has a “limited lifetime warranty” and a published “1/2″” IPS connection, which is the thread already on your wall.
It is also the cheapest way to move a household from 2.5 gpm to 1.75 gpm, which is the single change on this page with a number attached to it.

One spray pattern and a small face. Nobody has ever described a 2-1/2 in. single-function head as luxurious.

3. Best spray engine under $50
Speakman Hotel Shower Head, 2.0 GPM
Speakman · S-2005-HB-E2 · best for the hotel-shower feeling from a fixed head
Fifty sprays from five plungers at a published 2.0 gpm, with self-cleaning nozzles and a limited lifetime consumer warranty.
Speakman’s Hotel head is the one on this page that explains why hotel showers feel different. Speakman publishes “5 plungers with 50 sprays, 8 massage jets, 3 spray patterns” on a “4.13” in. face. More, smaller jets at a given flow rate is how you get a spray that feels firm rather than soft.
The E2 is the 2.0 gpm option of the three flow rates Speakman publishes for this head (1.75, 2.0 and 2.5). Speakman also publishes “Self-cleaning nozzles: Yes”, which matters more than it sounds in a hard-water area — a clogged nozzle is what turns a good head into a dribbling one. The hard-water picks are here.
The warranty is published in two halves: “Consumer warranty: Limited Lifetime” and “Commercial warranty: 1 Year Limited”. You are the consumer.

What we can’t tell you
No published install time, and the published tool list — “Adjustable wrench, Teflon tape” — is the only guidance on the fit.

4. Most settings for the money
Delta 8-Spray Touch-Clean Shower Head
Delta · 75898 · best for a shared bathroom where everyone wants a different spray
Eight named spray settings including a pause, Touch-Clean rubber nozzles and a lifetime limited warranty.
Delta’s 75898 publishes more settings than anything else here: “Full Body spray, Full spray with Massage, Massaging spray, Shampoo Rinsing spray, Shampoo Rinsing spray with Massage, Slow Massage spray, Soft Full spray, and Pause”. In a household where one person wants a drench and another wants a needle, that dial ends the argument.
The pause setting is the quietly useful one: it cuts the flow to a trickle while you lather, without touching the mixer and losing the temperature you had.
Delta also publishes the cleaning story plainly: “Soft, rubber Touch-Clean® spray holes allow you to easily wipe away calcium and lime buildup from the spray face of your shower head”. That is a thumb, not a vinegar bag. The full descaling routine is here.

The one to skip
Moen Engage Magnetix Handheld Shower, 3.5″ head
Moen · 26100 · best for nothing the 26100ep does not do for less
The same Engage Magnetix handheld at 2.5 gpm instead of 1.75, and it usually costs more than the version that uses less water.
This is the head most people land on, because it is the one without the two extra letters. Moen publishes the same six sprays, the same 3.5 in. face, the same 60 in. hose and the same magnetic dock on both. The only published difference is the flow rate: “2.5 Gpm (9.5 L/Min) Max.” against the EP’s “1.75 Gpm”.
Run them both for a year of eight-minute daily showers and the difference is about 2,190 gallons, on a head that normally costs more than the EP in the first place. There is no version of that trade that works in your favor.
If what you actually want is a bigger head rather than a bigger flow rate, the 26112 has a 5.5 in. face — it is just not a sub-$50 product. The full handheld ranking is here.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best shower head under $50
The Moen Engage Magnetix 26100EP. Moen publishes 1.75 gpm, six sprays, a 60-inch hose, a magnetic dock and a limited lifetime warranty, which is more published specification per dollar than anything else in the bracket.
is a cheap shower head worth it
Under $50 you are buying a spray face and a flow rate, and both are published. What you cannot buy at this price is a thermostatic valve, a solid brass body or filtration — those categories start higher.
does a lower gpm shower head feel weaker
Not necessarily. The EPA caps WaterSense heads at 2.0 gpm, and spray feel comes from how many jets that water is pushed through. The 2.0 gpm Speakman publishes 50 sprays from 5 plungers and feels firmer than a 2.5 gpm head with large holes.
how much water does a 1.75 gpm shower head save
About 2,190 gallons a year against a 2.5 gpm head, on eight-minute daily showers. The EPA puts the average family's saving from a WaterSense head at 2,700 gallons and more than 330 kWh a year.
can renters change a shower head
Yes. Every head on this page threads onto the existing shower arm with one wrench, nothing is drilled, and the original head screws back on at move-out. Keep it somewhere you will find it.
