The best bathroom upgrades under $100
Seven upgrades that were under $100 when we checked, chosen on what their makers publish rather than what they cost. Prices move; the specifications do not.
By Sawyer V. · · How we research

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
What we judged these on, in order
A price cap is a shopping constraint, not a standard. So the cap decided what was eligible, and these five questions decided the order:
- Does it change something you do every day? Water, footing, light, storage. A decorative object that costs $30 is not an upgrade.
- Does the maker publish the number that matters? A certification, a flow rate, a cup count, a load rating, a CRI figure. Anything ranked here publishes at least one.
- Does it fit without drilling? Every pick rates Safe on our install rating.
- Does it keep costing? Only the filtered head does, in cartridges.
- Is it still on sale? Checked on the day of writing, with the live price beside each pick.
About the price cap
Every pick was under $100 when this page was written, and we show live prices beside each one rather than typing numbers into prose. Prices move — a pick can drift over the line and back within a week — so treat the cap as the reason these products were considered, and the published specifications as the reason they were ranked.
Two of them are under $20 at the time of writing, which is the part of this list worth acting on first.
The order we would buy them in
- Bulbs. Five minutes, no tools, and it changes every time you look in the mirror.
- A tub mat, if the tub is slippery. This is the safety item on the list.
- The shower head or filter — a filter if your water is chlorinated, a handheld if you want reach. One threaded joint either way. The five steps are here.
- A bidet attachment, if you have wanted to try one.
- Hooks and the small stuff, once the daily things are sorted.
What $100 does not buy in a bathroom
- A towel warmer. The freestanding rails we cover publish 90 to 150 W and sit well above this cap, though buckets come closer. The buckets are ranked here.
- An electric bidet seat. Warm water, a dryer and a heated seat are all above the line, and they need an outlet. The seats are ranked here.
- Anything behind the wall. Valves, fans and lighting circuits are trade work whatever they cost.
- A lighted mirror. The LED mirrors we cover are hardwired and rate Owner-only.
What each pick publishes, side by side
The reason these nine are on the list and other cheap products are not is that each one states something you can check:
- Aquasana AQ-4100: NSF/ANSI 177 testing for over 90% chlorine reduction, a 10,000 gallon or six month cartridge, a 30-80 psi range and a 115°F maximum.
- Moen Engage 26100: a 60 in. hose, six spray functions, a 3.5 in. head, magnetic docking and a limited lifetime warranty.
- LUXE NEO 120: no electricity required, a guard gate with self-clean.
- Vive bath mat: 28 x 16 in., latex-free rubber, 116 suction cups, 60-day guarantee.
- Tooletries Oliver: 6.5 x 5.5 in., shatterproof, removable and reusable.
- GE Relax HD G25: 500 lumens, 2700K, CRI 90, 5.5 W, 5-year warranty.
- Kohler Cachet Nightlight: three brightness levels, a 10-hour cycle, 5-1/2 in. bolt centers, IAPMO/ANSI Z124.5.
- simplehuman over-door caddy: rust-proof stainless steel, 5-year warranty.
- Command bath hooks: 3 lb and 5 lb strip ratings, with a published application and removal sequence.
Five of the nine publish a warranty term. That is a better hit rate than the category as a whole, and it is not a coincidence: the makers who measure their products are the ones willing to stand behind them.
Five minutes, fifteen minutes, an afternoon
Sorted by how much of a Saturday each one costs:
- Five minutes, no tools: bulbs, the tub mat, the shower mirror, the over-door caddy, the toilet seat.
- Fifteen minutes, one wrench: the shower head or the filtered head, on the existing arm.
- Half an hour, and turn the water off first: the bidet attachment, which tees into the toilet supply.
- An hour of waiting: the adhesive hooks, because 3M publishes “wait 1 hour before use” after pressing the strips.
Cheap, but not unverified
The risk at this end of the market is not that products are bad, it is that nothing is published about them. The skip above is the example: a mat with no published width, no cup count and a weight capacity given as “Unlimited”. We would rather pay a few dollars more for a product whose maker states a number and stands behind it.
Where the cap bites hardest
Two categories are almost impossible to do well under a hundred dollars, and it is worth knowing which before you go looking. The first is anything heated: the towel rails we cover publish 60 to 155 W and sit above the line, and the bidet seats that publish warm water and a dryer are several times it. The second is anything certified for structure — a grab bar rated to 500 lb costs what it costs because the rating is tested.
The pattern across this list is that the cheap wins are the everyday ones: water, light, grip and storage. Those are the parts of a bathroom you touch daily, which is why a twenty-dollar purchase here can change the room more than a two-hundred-dollar one somewhere else.
If you rent
This list is effectively a renter’s list: every pick fits with hands or one wrench and comes off cleanly at move-out. Keep the originals — the shower head especially — in a labeled box. The no-tools upgrades are ranked here.
Every pick in full
9 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Vive Health · LVA1017M · best for a slippery tub floor

Vive’s bath mat publishes “Latex-free rubber” and “116 strong suction cups hold the bath mat securely in place”, washable in cold water with a 60-day guarantee.

Bath Mat
Drive Medical · 12950 · best for nothing we can verify
Cheap, and its own documents disagree with each other on the warranty and publish no width.
Under $100 should not mean unchecked. Drive Medical’s bath mat publishes a “Length 35.5"” but no width, “multiple suction cups” with no count, and a weight capacity given as “Unlimited”, which is not a specification.
Its warranty documents contradict each other — a catalog listing a limited 90-day term against a manual describing a lifetime warranty that excludes rubber accessories. For a few dollars more, the Vive mat above publishes a cup count, a size and a guarantee.

Questions people actually ask
what is the best cheap bathroom upgrade
The one you use daily. A shower filter tested to NSF/ANSI 177 or a handheld on a 60 in. hose changes every shower, and both fit on the existing shower arm with no drilling.
can you upgrade a bathroom for under $100
Several things, yes: a shower head, a bidet attachment, a non-slip tub mat, better bulbs and adhesive hooks were all under $100 when this page was written. A towel warmer, an electric bidet seat and anything behind the wall were not.
what bathroom upgrades add the most value for renters
The reversible ones. A head swap, a bidet attachment, a tub mat and bulbs all rate Safe on our install rating, which means nothing is fixed to the property and the originals go back on move-out day.
are cheap bathroom products worth buying
When their makers publish specifications, yes — the filter here is tested to NSF/ANSI 177. The ones to avoid are those publishing adjectives instead of numbers, like a bath mat rated for “unlimited” weight with no published width.
