How to remove a towel bar

There is a set screw under one end, and once you have found it the bar lifts off. The part people get wrong is what they do with the holes afterwards.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Screwdrivers, chisels and a saw hanging on a workshop wall rack

The short answer

Look underneath each post for a small set screw — Delta’s Trinsic bar takes a 3/32 in. Allen wrench. Loosen it, lift the bar and post off the wall bracket, and unscrew the bracket. For an adhesive bar, 3M’s published method is to slide the bar off the base and pull the tab straight down.

Covering the old holesAsk first

Why it will not just pull off

A towel bar is two pieces: a wall bracket screwed to the wall, and a post that slides over the bracket and locks to it with a set screw. From the front you cannot see either. That is the whole design, and it is why people conclude their bar is glued on.

Finding the screw when there is no screw

A handful of bars use a different fixing. If a careful look with a flashlight finds nothing underneath the posts:

  • Check the back edge of each post, where the set screw is sometimes moved to.
  • Twist the post gently. Some older bars thread onto the bracket and unscrew counterclockwise.
  • Look for a seam of caulk. A bar that was caulked to the tile needs the caulk cut with a utility knife before anything will move.

The holes are the real job

Removing the bar takes minutes; the wall takes longer. What you find behind the brackets decides the work:

  • Screws into studs: fill and paint. The easiest outcome.
  • Plastic expansion anchors: tap through the wall with a screwdriver rather than levering them out, then fill.
  • Toggle bolts: the toggle drops inside the cavity when unscrewed. That is normal and it stays there.
  • Tile: a hole drilled through tile cannot be filled invisibly. If the bar is coming off tile in a rental, think about that before you start. The move-out checklist is here.

If the bar is loose rather than coming off

A wobbling towel bar is usually one of three things, in this order of likelihood:

  1. A loose set screw. Tighten it with the hex key. This is most wobbles, and it takes thirty seconds.
  2. A loose bracket screw. Lift the bar off, tighten the two screws in each bracket, and put it back. If a screw spins freely, the anchor behind it has failed.
  3. A failed anchor. The bracket screw turns without tightening because the plastic anchor is spinning in the hole. Replace it with a larger anchor or a toggle, or move the bracket onto a stud if one is within reach.

Refit, or replace?

If the old bar is coming off because you want a different one, measure before you shop. Bracket spacing is rarely the same between brands — Delta publishes 25 in. between brackets on the Trinsic and a 26-1/2 in. assembled width on the Cassidy — so a replacement usually means new holes beside the old ones unless you buy the same model. Sizing is covered here.

Where the wall is tile, that arithmetic matters more than it sounds: new holes in tile mean a diamond bit, and the old holes will still be visible. In that situation an adhesive bar beside the old fixing, or living with the landlord’s bar, is often the better answer.

What the job leaves behind

Plan for four holes from a two-bracket bar, each about the diameter of a pencil, plus the outline where the bracket sat. On painted drywall that is fifteen minutes of filler and a touch-up. On tile it is permanent: the honest options there are a new fixture that covers the same holes, or a color-matched grout filler and a decision to live with it.

If you are a tenant

Removing a landlord’s towel bar to hang your own is the kind of change that looks trivial and is not: you are left holding four holes that have to be made good. Adhesive alternatives exist precisely for this, and 3M rates its water-resistant strips at 3 lb (medium) and 5 lb (large) so you can judge what they will carry. Adhesive against drilled is compared here.

Command’s bath towel bar publishes its own removal: slide the bar up and off the base, then pull the tab straight down. 3M’s instruction for its hooks is the same in one phrase — “always pull straight down”.

Pulling out from the wall instead of down is what takes paint with it. Removing Command hooks cleanly is covered here.

Questions people actually ask

how do you get a towel bar off the wall

Loosen the set screw under each post — Delta publishes a 3/32 in. Allen wrench for its Trinsic bar — then lift the bar and posts off the wall brackets and unscrew the brackets.

my towel bar has no screws, how do i remove it

Check the back edge of each post as well as underneath, try twisting the post counterclockwise in case it threads on, and look for a bead of caulk sealing it to tile, which has to be cut first.

how do you remove a command towel bar without damaging paint

Slide the bar up and off its base, then pull the tab straight down. 3M's published instruction for its Command products is always to pull straight down rather than out from the wall.

Removing Command hooks without damage

what do you do with the holes left by a towel bar

Tap plastic anchors through the wall rather than levering them out, let toggle bolts drop into the cavity, then fill, sand and touch up. A two-bracket bar usually leaves four holes.
