What size towel warmer do you need?
Bar counts sell towel warmers; towel sizes should buy them. Here is how the published numbers line up against the towels in your cupboard.

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
Start with the towel, not the rail
Bar counts are what makers advertise, and they mean nothing until you know what you are hanging. Published towel sizes vary more than most people expect: ONSEN’s Supima waffle bath sheet is “38 x 67 in or 97 x 170 cm” and its bath towel is “31 x 57 in or 79 x 145 cm”, while Parachute publishes its waffle bath towel at 56 x 30 in.
A 67 in. bath sheet folded in half is still 33 in. of wet cloth, which is more than a four-bar rail can carry without doubling it over itself — and a towel folded onto itself dries at the fold last. The size difference between a sheet and a towel is set out here.
What a bar count actually tells you
Almost no maker publishes a towel capacity. Across the rails we cover, WarmlyYours states one for the Barcelona — “warming up to 2 large towels” on eight bars — and one for the Huron, at “1-2” towels on eight bars. Everything else publishes a bar count and leaves you to guess.
Those two published figures give a working ratio of about four bars per bath towel. On that basis:
- 4 bars: one towel, or two hand towels. The Palma, at 60 W.
- 6 bars: one bath towel with room beside it. The Ibiza, at 90 W.
- 8 bars: two large towels, published. The Barcelona, at 150 W.
- 10 bars: two towels plus hand towels. The hardwired Grande 10, at 155 W, which WarmlyYours describes as having “top-bar spacing for hand towels”.
The three footprints, measured
Size is depth before it is height. The published depths of the rails we cover run from 4.33 in. for the wall-mounted Palma to 13.97 in. for the freestanding Ibiza and 15.5 in. for the Barcelona. In a bathroom where the door swings past the rail, those 11 inches decide the purchase.
- Wall-mounted: Palma, 19.68 x 17.71 x 4.33 in. Four anchors, and the permission trade-off is covered here.
- Freestanding: Ibiza, 34.84 x 21.85 x 13.97 in.; Barcelona, 37 x 24 x 15.5 in. No fixings, but real floor.
- Hardwired: Grande 10, 34.25 in. tall, 20.5 in. wide, 4.3 in. deep, with a published mounting footprint of 19 x 27-1/8 in.
- Bucket: Zadro, 21.25 in. high and 12 in. in diameter. A different shape of answer entirely.
Wattage rises with size, and so does the bill
Bigger rails draw more: 60 W for four bars, 90 W for six, 150 W for eight, 155 W for ten. Heat output is published alongside — 205, 307 and 512 Btu an hour respectively — so the size you choose is also the running cost you choose.
At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh, a 90 W rail on a two-hour timer is about three cents a day; the 150 W Barcelona on the same timer is about six. Left on permanently, a 60 W rail is about 26 cents a day. Every rail on this site is costed here.
Measure the wall, not just the rail
Two published constraints catch people out. WarmlyYours specifies its hardwired rails be installed “at least 24" away from a wet location”, which rules out the tempting spot beside the shower. And a plug-in rail is only as flexible as its cord: the Ibiza publishes a “71″” cord, the Barcelona “77″”, both on a “NEMA 5-15 (Type B)” plug. Measure from the outlet, not from the wall you pictured it on.
If you rent
Size and permission are the same question for a tenant. The freestanding sizes rate Safe on our install rating because nothing is fixed to the building; the wall-mounted Palma rates Owner-only for its four anchors, and every hardwired rail does too. How the ratings work is here.
Every pick in full
4 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.
1. Smallest published footprint
WarmlyYours Palma Wall-Mounted Plug-In Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TWS2-PLM04PP · best for a wall with no floor to spare
Four bars, 60 W, and a body under 20 in. tall and 4.33 in. deep — the smallest rail we cover.
If the room has no floor to give, the size question becomes a wall question. WarmlyYours’ Palma publishes “19.68″” high by “17.71″” wide by “4.33″” deep, with “4” heated bars at “60 W” and “205 Btu” an hour.
Four bars is one towel folded in thirds, or two hand towels. It is the size to buy when the alternative is nothing, and the reason it fits is the 4.33 in. depth — a third of what the freestanding rails need.

Why: WarmlyYours ships it with a wall-mount hardware kit, which means anchors in tile or drywall. The plug end is renter-friendly; the bracket end leaves four holes you would have to make good.

What’s wrong with it
It is wall-mounted, so it needs four anchors in tile or drywall and it leaves holes.
What we can’t tell you
WarmlyYours publishes no towel capacity for the Palma, only the bar count.

2. The middle size
WarmlyYours Ibiza Freestanding Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TWS5-IBZ06PP · best for one bath towel, daily
Six bars, 90 W, freestanding on a plug — the size most single-towel bathrooms want.
The Ibiza publishes “6” heated bars, “90 W”, “307 Btu” an hour and “34.84″ (885 mm) H x 21.85″ (555 mm) W x 13.97″ (355 mm) D”.
Six bars takes one bath towel hung over two or three bars with room left for a hand towel. Note the depth: 13.97 in. of floor, against 4.33 in. for the wall-mounted Palma. That is the trade for needing no anchors at all.

3. The one that publishes a capacity
WarmlyYours Barcelona Freestanding Towel Warmer
WarmlyYours · TW-BC-08BS-FS2 · best for two large towels
Eight bars, 150 W, and the only rail here whose maker states how many towels it holds.
The Barcelona is the exception to the industry’s silence on capacity: WarmlyYours publishes “8” heated round bars “warming up to 2 large towels”, at “150 W” and “512 Btu” an hour, measuring “24″ (610 mm) W x 37″ (940 mm) H x 15.5″ (394 mm) D”.
That one published sentence is the most useful sizing fact in the category. Two large towels on eight bars is the ratio to carry across to any rail you are considering: roughly four bars per bath towel if you want it dry rather than merely warm.

4. When bars are the wrong shape
Zadro 20-Liter Towel Warmer Bucket
Zadro · TWB01 · best for one towel, warmed on demand, with no floor plan at all
A 20-liter tub, 12 in. across, that heats one towel on a timer instead of holding it dry.
A bucket sidesteps sizing: it is a “20-Liter large towel heater tub” from Zadro, 21.25 in. high and 12 in. in diameter, drawing up to 480 W with a timer you “set… to 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes before automatically shutting off”.
It warms a towel for one shower rather than keeping towels dry all day, which is a different job. Bucket against rack is compared here.

Questions people actually ask
how many bars should a towel warmer have
Work on about four bars per bath towel. WarmlyYours publishes its eight-bar Barcelona as warming up to two large towels and its eight-bar Huron as holding one to two, which are the only published capacities among the rails we cover.
what size towel warmer for a bath sheet
A bath sheet is larger than a bath towel — ONSEN publishes 38 x 67 in. against 31 x 57 in. — so it needs more bars to hang without folding onto itself. Six bars is the practical minimum for one bath sheet.
how much space does a towel warmer need
Depth is the number to check. Among the rails we cover, published depths run from 4.33 in. for a wall-mounted Palma to 15.5 in. for a freestanding Barcelona. WarmlyYours also specifies hardwired rails be installed at least 24 in. away from a wet location.
does a bigger towel warmer cost more to run
Yes, in proportion to its wattage. WarmlyYours publishes 60 W for four bars, 90 W for six, 150 W for eight and 155 W for ten; at 18.34 cents per kWh, a two-hour daily cycle costs about three cents on the 90 W rail and about six on the 150 W.
