The best bathroom hardware for a powder room

Nobody showers in a powder room, which changes what belongs on the walls. Hand towels, a roll within reach, soap and a small can — and nothing else.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Delta Trinsic Towel Ring

The short answer

Buy a towel ring rather than a bar: it takes about 6 in. of wall and holds the only towel this room needs. Add a metal roll holder placed to the ADA’s 7 to 9 in., a sensor soap pump so guests touch nothing, and a 4.5 L can that fits beside the pan.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

What a powder room actually needs

A powder room — a half-bath with a basin and a toilet and no shower — has a short, repeatable list: somewhere to dry hands, a roll within reach, soap, and somewhere to put a paper towel. Everything beyond that is decoration competing for wall.

Because guests use it, the fittings are on display in a way that fittings in your own bathroom are not. That argues for metal over plated plastic, and for matching finishes, which is easier when you are only buying three or four pieces. The two most common finishes are compared here.

The published numbers worth working to

The ADA Standards give the one placement figure everybody gets wrong: “Toilet paper dispensers…shall be 7 inches (180 mm) minimum and 9 inches (230 mm) maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor”. Those Standards govern regulated spaces rather than homes, but the reach they describe is the same reach your guests have. The other published heights are here.

The second number is projection. In a narrow room, how far a fitting sticks out decides whether the door clears it: 2 in. for the towel ring, 3-11/16 in. for the roll holder, 3-5/16 in. for the bar we would skip.

Ring, bar or hook?

A ring is the powder-room default: a hand towel, folded once, on 6 in. of wall. A hook is cheaper and smaller still, but a towel on a hook dries slowly because it hangs in a bunch. A bar is for bath towels, which this room does not have. The bar-against-ring comparison is here.

The order to fit them in

  1. Roll holder first. Its position is fixed by the toilet, not by taste, so it sets the reference for everything else on that wall.
  2. Towel ring second, beside the basin rather than across the room, at a height where a folded hand towel clears the rim and any switch plate.
  3. Pump and can last. Neither is fixed to anything, so they fill the space that is left rather than dictating it.

Both drilled fittings ship with a template, which is worth using even if you have done it before: in a 3 x 6 ft room, an inch out is visible from the doorway. If you are taking old fittings down first, that is here.

Matching finishes across two brands

A powder room shows its hardware more than any other bathroom, because there is so little else in it. The finishes published here are Delta’s six on the Trinsic ring — including Chrome, Champagne Bronze and Matte Black — and Kohler’s four on the Devonshire holder: Polished Chrome, Vibrant Polished Brass, Vibrant Brushed Nickel and Oil-Rubbed Bronze.

Chrome is the one finish that reads the same across brands, which is why mixed-brand sets so often end up chrome. Anything warmer — brass, bronze, gold — varies enough between makers that a Delta piece and a Kohler piece will not match on the same wall. The two most common finishes are compared here.

What it costs to keep running

Almost nothing, and the one item with a consumable publishes its interval: simplehuman states “4 Months On 1 Charge” for the sensor pump, with a 3 to 4 hour recharge, so it needs attention three times a year. The step can takes code A liners. Nothing else here has a running cost at all.

If you rent

Three of the four picks need drilling and rate Ask first; the can and the pump need nothing at all. If the walls are off limits, the no-drill versions of a ring and a roll holder do exist and are covered separately. The no-drill towel fittings are ranked here.

The mirror and the light are part of the hardware

A powder room is usually an interior room with no window, so the mirror and whatever lights it are as much a fitting decision as the towel ring. Light from the sides beats light from above on a face, and a fixture with a published damp rating beats one without in a room whose air never fully clears. Lighting a windowless bathroom is covered here.

If the room is small enough that a sconce would be in the way, a lighted mirror does both jobs in one footprint. LED mirror against vanity lighting is compared here.

What guests actually notice

In a room somebody uses once, three things register: whether the roll is where their hand goes, whether the towel is obviously the one they are meant to use, and whether the soap works without being touched. That is the entire brief, and it is why this page is four items long rather than ten.

Hand towels, and how many

One on the ring and one folded spare within reach is enough for a room used a few times a day. Any more and they stop looking like towels and start looking like display, which is the point at which guests stop using them and reach for the paper instead. If the room is used often enough that one towel is damp by the evening, that is an argument for a second ring rather than a bar.

Why four pieces is the whole list

A full bathroom needs fittings for bathing, for storage and for two or three people’s routines. A powder room needs fittings for a two-minute visit. Every extra hook, shelf or bar takes wall from a room that has about six feet of it, and none of them get used.

What we would not put in a powder room

A second towel bar. One hand towel is what gets used; the second bar holds something decorative that nobody dares touch.

A full-size trash can. 4.5 L is about right; anything larger takes the floor space the room does not have.

A grab bar chosen for looks. If someone in the house needs one, buy it on its rating and place it properly — it is a load-bearing fitting, not a towel bar. Why the two are not interchangeable is here.

Every pick in full

4 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Delta Trinsic Towel Ring

Trinsic Towel Ring

Delta · 759460 · best for a hand towel on a short run of wall

A ring 6-13/32 in. wide that extends 2 in. from the wall, with a template and a lifetime limited warranty.

A powder room dries hands, not bodies. Delta’s Trinsic ring publishes “5-11/16 in. H x 2 in. D x 6-13/32 in. W” and “Extends 2 in. from wall”, which is the smallest useful towel fitting you can put beside a basin.

“Mounting hardware and mounting template included”, a “Lifetime Limited Warranty”, and Delta’s own published advice on fixings: plastic or lead anchors in tile, toggle bolts in plaster or drywall where there is no wood behind.

Brass and zinc, 10 in. wide, 3-11/16 in. off the wall, with a template and a lifetime limited warranty.

Delta Trinsic 24 in. Towel Bar

The one to skip

Trinsic 24 in. Towel Bar

Delta · 759240 · best for a full bathroom where bath towels get hung

A 24 in. bar is the right fitting in the wrong room — it wants 26-1/4 in. of wall a powder room rarely has.

There is nothing wrong with this bar. Delta publishes “1-1/8 in. H x 3-5/16 in. D x 26-1/4 in. W” with 25 in. between mounting brackets, a 5/8 in. bar, a template and a lifetime limited warranty.

The problem is arithmetic. A powder room is often 3 x 6 ft, and most of the wall is taken by a door, a basin and a pan. Giving 26-1/4 in. of the remainder to a bar that will only ever hold a hand towel is the commonest mistake in this room — a 6-13/32 in. ring does the same job.

Questions people actually ask

what hardware do you need in a powder room

A towel ring, a toilet paper holder, soap and a small covered can. A powder room has no shower, so bath-towel fittings and shower storage are wasted wall.

should you use a towel bar or a towel ring in a powder room

A ring. Delta's Trinsic ring is 6-13/32 in. wide against 26-1/4 in. for its 24 in. bar, and a hand towel is all this room ever dries.

Towel bar vs towel ring

how high should a towel ring be

No standard publishes a height for towel rings. Work from the towel instead: hang it so the bottom of a folded hand towel clears the basin rim and any switch plate beside it.

where should the toilet paper holder go in a half bath

The ADA Standards put the dispenser 7 to 9 inches in front of the water closet, measured to its centerline, with the outlet 15 to 48 inches above the floor.
