The first apartment bathroom checklist
Moving-in lists are long because they are written by people selling things. This one is five items, in order, and every one of them comes with you to the next place.
By Sawyer V. · · How we research

The short answer
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.
Quick picks
Tap any row for the full write-up. Prices are checked against Amazon rather than remembered — where we have no verified figure the button says so.
The rule that makes this list short
Buy nothing that stays behind. Every item above comes off in minutes, goes in a box, and works in the next apartment — which means the money follows you rather than improving somebody else’s property.
That single rule removes most of what a moving-in list usually contains: no towel bars screwed into tile, no new faucet, no light fixture, no shelving anchored to drywall. All five items here rate Safe on our install rating. How the rating is derived is here.
The order, and why it is this order
| # | Item | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shower curtain liner | The one item you do not want to inherit, and the cheapest to replace |
| 2 | Two reusable hooks | Rental bathrooms are short of hanging space and you cannot drill |
| 3 | WaterSense shower head | The fitting you use longest each day, and it pays for itself |
| 4 | 90 CRI bulbs | Cheapest change that alters how the whole room reads |
| 5 | Bidet attachment | The only item that adds a function rather than improving one |
Items 1 and 2 are urgent, 3 and 4 pay for themselves, and 5 is the one you will tell people about. If the budget only stretches to three, stop after the shower head.
What to check on day one, before buying anything
- Photograph everything. Grout, seals, the shower head, the inside of the cabinet. This is the single most valuable ten minutes of a tenancy and it costs nothing.
- Run the extractor and hold a sheet of paper to it. If the paper does not hold, the fan is not moving air, and that is a landlord conversation to have in month one rather than month eleven. The renter-friendly ventilation options are here.
- Check the toilet shut-off valve turns. If it is seized, do not fit a bidet attachment until it is fixed — and tell the landlord, because a seized shut-off is their problem before it is yours.
- Measure the shower opening and the towel bar. Two numbers that decide half of what you can buy.
What to leave alone
The faucet, the fan and any light fixture. All three are wired or plumbed into the property. Replacing one makes it the landlord’s asset the day it goes in, and you do not get it back.
Anything requiring an anchor in tile. A hole in tile is not a patch-and-paint repair, and it is the most expensive small mistake available in a rental bathroom. Adhesive against drilled is compared here.
The grout. Re-grouting is genuinely useful and genuinely the owner’s job. Ask rather than do. How to ask, in a way that works, is here.
Storage, when the bathroom has none
First apartments routinely have a pedestal sink and no cupboard at all. The answer is freestanding and over-the-door rather than anything fixed to a wall. Storage for a pedestal sink is here, and the small-rental storage options are here.
On move-out day
Everything on this list comes off in about twenty minutes, and the original parts go back on. The head unthreads, the hooks peel away without adhesive residue, the bulbs swap back and the bidet attachment is the install run backwards. The full move-out checklist is here.
Every pick in full
5 we would buy. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

1. Buy this first
Softy PEVA Shower Liner, Mildew-Resistant
Zenna Home · 71160 · best for the one thing a new apartment bathroom almost always needs on day one
The one liner Zenna labels mildew-resistant, in PEVA, in stall or regular sizes — the cheapest thing on the list and the most urgent.
Whatever else the apartment came with, the liner is the item you want to replace before you shower in it. Zenna’s Softy PEVA liner is published as “Mildew-Resistant” — the one liner Zenna labels that way in its listing — in “Stall or Regular Sizes”.
Measure before you order. A stall shower and a standard tub take different widths, and a liner that is too short wicks water onto the floor at the bottom corner, which is how a deposit disappears. The full liner ranking, including gauges, is here.
Zenna publishes the mildew claim and not much else: no gauge for this model, no antimicrobial agent or test, no warranty. At this price that is the trade, and we would still replace the one that came with the apartment. Whether you need a liner at all is here.

What’s wrong with it
Zenna publishes no gauge for this model, so how heavy the PEVA is — the thing that decides whether it clings to you — is not stated.

2. Buy two of these
Tooletries The Arnold Shower Hook
Tooletries · The Arnold · best for a bathroom with one towel bar and nowhere to put a robe
Stainless steel with a waterproof silicone grip, rated to 4 lbs, published as completely removable and reusable.
Rental bathrooms are short of hanging space and long on surfaces you are not allowed to drill. The Arnold publishes “heavy-duty stainless steel” with “100% waterproof silicone”, a capacity of “up to 4lbs”, and that it is “completely removable and reusable”.
Nothing cures, which is the difference from an adhesive hook: it can be moved as often as you like and it does not have to be peeled off a painted wall when you leave. Why that matters at move-out is here.
Read Tooletries’ published surface list before buying: it wants “flat, smooth, shiny, non-porous surfaces” and names “mosaic, subway, and kit-kat tiles” as unsuitable. A lot of rental bathrooms are subway tile, and that is worth knowing before the parcel arrives.

3. The upgrade that pays for itself
Moen One-Function Eco-Performance Shower Head
Moen · 6300EP · best for a rental shower head that was chosen by somebody who does not pay the water bill
1.75 gpm, WaterSense, a 2-1/2 in. face and a limited lifetime warranty, on one threaded joint.
Landlords buy the cheapest head available, and the cheapest head available is usually 2.5 gpm. The Moen 6300EP publishes “1.75 Gpm (6.65 L/Min) Max.”, “One-Function Full Spray”, a “2-1/2″ Diameter Spray Head” and that it “meets EPA WaterSense® criteria”, with a “limited lifetime warranty”.
The EPA publishes the saving for an average family moving to WaterSense: “2,700 gallons per year” and “more than 330 kilowatt hours of electricity annually” — about $61 of electricity at the EIA’s published average rate, which is several times what the head costs.
Keep the landlord’s head in a labeled bag in the cupboard. It goes back on in two minutes on move-out day. Everything under $50 is ranked here.

Arithmetic on published specifications, not a measurement. Rate source: U.S. EPA WaterSense — Showerheads (2.5 gpm federal standard, 2.0 gpm WaterSense maximum).
What’s wrong with it
One spray pattern and a small face. It is a sensible head, not an exciting one.

Moen publishes no material for it, so whether the body is metal or plated plastic is not stated.

4. The cheapest thing that changes the room
GE Relax HD LED G25 Vanity Globe Bulbs, 60-Watt Replacement, Soft White (2 Pack)
GE Lighting · Relax HD G25, 60 W replacement · best for a rental bathroom lit by whatever bulb was in the fixture when you got the keys
5.5 W for a 60-watt replacement at 2700K with a published CRI of 90, dimmable, with a five-year warranty.
Rental lighting is a lottery and it is the cheapest thing in the room to fix. GE’s Relax HD globe publishes “500lm” from 5.5 watts at 2700K, with a CRI of 90 and a five-year warranty.
CRI is the number almost nobody shops on and the one that decides whether the mirror is telling the truth. At 90, colors render close to daylight; at the 80 a builder-grade bulb typically manages, they do not. Soft white against daylight at the same CRI is compared here.
Keep the old bulbs. Everything here is designed to be put back.

What’s wrong with it
If the fixture itself is the problem — one bare globe over a mirror — better bulbs will not fix the shadows.

5. The upgrade worth the splurge
Brondell SimpleSpa Thinline Essential Bidet Attachment
Brondell · SS-150 · best for adding something the apartment did not come with
A 0.2 in. plate under the existing seat with a braided metal hose and an all-metal T-valve, no outlet and no plumber.
Everything above improves what is already there. This adds something that was not. Brondell’s SimpleSpa Thinline publishes a “Universal, adjustable toilet fit” that “installs under your existing seat”, with “no plumbers or plumbing knowledge required”.
For a rental, the fittings are the specification to care about: “braided metal hose and all-metal T-Valve”. A plastic valve that weeps onto a landlord’s floor is a deposit problem, not just a plumbing one. What to look for in a first bidet is here.
It is “Powered by water pressure alone”, so there is no outlet to find beside the toilet — which is just as well, because most apartments do not have one.

Questions people actually ask
what do i need for my first apartment bathroom
Five things, in order: a mildew-resistant shower curtain liner, two reusable hooks, a WaterSense shower head (Moen's 6300EP publishes 1.75 gpm), 90 CRI bulbs, and a bidet attachment. None needs a drill and all five come with you.
what bathroom upgrades can renters make
Anything that uses a connection that already exists and makes no holes: shower heads thread onto the existing arm, reusable hooks grip without adhesive, bulbs swap in the fixture, and a bidet attachment slides under the seat you already have.
should i replace the shower head in a rental
Yes, and keep the original. The EPA puts the saving from a WaterSense head at 2,700 gallons and more than 330 kWh a year for an average family — several times the cost of the head, and it unthreads in two minutes when you leave.
what should i check in a rental bathroom on day one
Photograph the grout, seals and fittings; hold a sheet of paper to the running extractor to check it moves air; make sure the toilet shut-off valve turns; and measure the shower opening and the towel bar.
what should renters not install in a bathroom
Anything wired or plumbed — faucets, fans and light fixtures all become the landlord's asset the day they go in — and anything needing an anchor in tile, because a hole in tile is not a patch-and-paint repair.
