Are waffle towels worth it?
The honest answer turns on one published sentence from a maker who sells both weaves, and on a weight figure that separates waffle from plush by a factor of three.

What the weave actually changes
Terry is loops. Thousands of upright cotton loops standing off a backing cloth, which is why a plush towel feels deep and why it takes a day to dry: each loop holds water in its own little well and the cloth underneath holds more.
A waffle is a honeycomb of raised ridges and sunk squares woven into the cloth itself. There is far less fiber, the pockets are open to the air on both sides, and the surface area doing the evaporating is enormous relative to the water held. That is the whole mechanism, and every difference below follows from it.
The published weights, side by side
| Towel | Weave | Published weight |
|---|---|---|
| Parachute Waffle | Open waffle | 240 GSM |
| ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel | Open waffle | 470 g over 31 x 57 in. — about 410 GSM, derived |
| Coyuchi Air Weight | Twill, long loops | 550 GSM |
| Parachute Organic Plush | Terry pile | 750 GSM |
A 240 GSM waffle and a 750 GSM plush are not two versions of the same product. They are three times apart in the amount of cotton you are drying yourself with, and the whole experience follows from that. What GSM measures, and the range across everything we cover, is here.
Are waffle towels absorbent?
Yes — and the question people are really asking is different. Cotton is cotton; a waffle moves water off skin perfectly well. What changes is the reservoir. A 240 GSM waffle has far less fiber to store that water in, so it reaches the point of feeling damp sooner than a 750 GSM plush does.
For one person drying once, that point arrives after you have finished. For a bath sheet shared between two people back to back, it may not. That is the real dividing line, and it is about capacity rather than absorbency.
The thing waffle is genuinely best at
Not smelling. A towel goes musty because it stays damp for hours in a warm room, which is exactly the condition bacteria need. A waffle gives its water back to the air in a fraction of the time, so the window closes before anything grows.
In a windowless bathroom with a weak extractor, that is not a marginal benefit. It is the difference between a towel you can use four days and one you cannot use twice. The full fix for musty towels is here. And if the room itself is the problem, a bigger fan is upstream of all of it.
Where waffle costs you
The first ten seconds. Parachute’s published caveat is about feel, not performance, and feel is what you are buying a towel for.
Hooks. Parachute publishes that the weave “can lose its shape” on a hook. Waffle towels want a bar or a rail, which is a hardware decision you should make before the towels arrive. Bar sizing is here.
Snagging. An open weave has loops to catch on a ring, a watch or a cat. ONSEN answers it with extra-long-staple Supima, which is the published defense; a short-staple waffle has none.
Who should buy waffle, and who should not
Buy waffle if your bathroom has no window or a feeble fan; if towels in your house smell before they are due a wash; if you have limited rail space and need towels that dry in a single layer; or if you want a towel that packs small.
Do not buy waffle if the sensation of a deep towel is the point of the towel; if a bath sheet gets used by two people in a row; or if the only place to hang it is a hook. In those cases a short-loop terry gets you most of the drying speed with none of the argument. The full towel ranking is here.
What we have not done
We have not weighed a wet towel, timed a drying rack or run a wash test. Every figure on this page is published by the maker, except ONSEN’s 410 GSM, which is arithmetic from ONSEN’s own published weight and dimensions and is labeled as derived everywhere it appears.

1. The waffle worth the money
ONSEN Supima Waffle Bath Towel
ONSEN · Supima Waffle Bath Towel · best for someone who wants waffle drying without a thin towel
31 x 57 in. and 470 g of USA-grown Supima cotton — about 410 GSM, which is the heaviest waffle we can derive a figure for.
ONSEN’s Supima waffle is the one that answers the usual complaint about the weave. ONSEN publishes “31 x 57 in or 79 x 145 cm” and “16.5 oz or 470 g”, and 470 g over 1.15 square meters works out at about 410 GSM. That is heavier than most waffle towels on the market and still well under a plush terry.
The fiber is published as “100% USA-grown extra-long-staple Supima® cotton”, which is the staple length that keeps a loose weave from shedding, and the towel is “OEKO-TEX® certified”. What that certification does and does not cover is here.
ONSEN also publishes a “60-Shower Trial”, which is the right unit for this decision: nobody knows how they feel about a waffle towel until they have used one for a month.

What’s wrong with it
It is a 31 x 57 in. bath towel, not a bath sheet. If you wrap rather than dry, this is the smaller end.
What we can’t tell you
ONSEN publishes no GSM figure. The 410 above is derived from its own published weight and dimensions, not a number ONSEN states.

2. The lightest waffle, and the most honest page
Waffle Towels
Parachute · Waffle Towels · best for a fast-drying towel for a bathroom with no ventilation
240 GSM of long-staple Turkish cotton in an open waffle, published with both its drying claim and its one real caveat.
Parachute’s waffle towels publish 240 GSM, “100% long-staple Turkish cotton” and an “open waffle weave” that is “lightweight and quick-drying”. At 240 GSM this is less than a third of the weight of the same brand’s 750 GSM plush towel.
What makes this the most useful product page in the category is that Parachute also publishes the downside, in its own words: a honeycomb weave “may not feel as immediately dry against the skin as terry cloth”. That is the entire argument against waffle, printed by someone selling it.
Read the care line too: “Do not hang on a hook, as it can cause the wonderfully stretchy waffle weave to lose its shape”. A waffle towel needs a bar. Bar against hook is settled here, and this is the clearest case in it.

3. If the answer is no
ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Towel
ONSEN · Sculpted Terry Bath Towel · best for the terry feel with some of the waffle drying behavior
The same maker's short-loop sculpted terry, published as drying faster than traditional terry — the compromise between the two weaves.
If the published caveat above is a deal-breaker, the fix is not a 750 GSM hotel towel. It is a short-loop terry. ONSEN’s sculpted terry is “100% USA-grown cotton” at “28 x 55 in or 71 x 140 cm”, published as a short-loop weave that dries faster than traditional terry.
You get the pile against the skin, which is what people actually mean when they say a waffle feels wrong, without the long loops that hold water for a day and a half. The full head-to-head between the weaves is here.

Why: Nothing is fitted or fixed. The rating exists to be honest about the whole catalog, and for a towel the honest answer is that there is nothing to install.

What’s wrong with it
It is still terry. It will not dry as fast as a 240 GSM waffle, and in an unventilated bathroom that gap is what you notice.
What we can’t tell you
ONSEN publishes neither a weight nor a GSM for this one, so there is no number to put against the waffle's 410.

Questions people actually ask
are waffle towels worth it
Yes if drying speed matters more than plushness. Waffle weaves are published at 240 to about 410 GSM against 550 to 750 for plush, so they dry faster and resist the musty smell. Parachute publishes the catch: a waffle may not feel as immediately dry against the skin as terry.
are waffle towels absorbent
Yes — they move water off skin as well as any cotton. What they have less of is capacity: a 240 GSM waffle holds far less water than a 750 GSM plush, so it reaches the damp point sooner when shared.
do waffle towels dry faster than terry
Yes. They carry a fraction of the fiber and the honeycomb pockets are open to air on both sides, so the water evaporates much sooner. Parachute publishes its waffle range as lightweight and quick-drying.
do waffle towels smell less
In practice yes, for the same reason they dry faster. Mustiness comes from a towel staying damp for hours; a waffle closes that window sooner, which matters most in a bathroom with poor ventilation.
can you hang waffle towels on a hook
Parachute publishes that you should not: hanging the weave on a hook can cause it to lose its shape. A waffle towel wants a bar or a heated rail, in a single layer.
