The best bathroom gifts under $50

A bathroom gift has to survive two tests: it works on the first day, and it is still in use in March. These five pass both, and they cost less than a round of drinks.

By Sawyer V. · · How we research

Tooletries The Harvey Toothbrush & Razor Holder

The short answer

Buy the Tooletries Harvey: a silicone toothbrush and razor holder with published drainage holes that is removable and reusable, so it works in a rental and leaves nothing behind. Best surprise gift: a Brondell SimpleSpa bidet attachment. Best splurge inside the budget: a set of Coyuchi Air Weight towels. Skip the toilet brush, however good it is.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them — here is exactly how that works.

What makes a bathroom gift land

Three tests, and the gifts that fail do so on the second one.

  1. It works on day one. Nothing that needs a drill, a plumber or a landlord conversation. Every pick above rates Safe on our install rating, which means it goes in with hands or one wrench and comes out leaving nothing behind. How the rating works is here.
  2. It fits a bathroom you have not measured. You usually cannot check the recipient’s hole spacing, rail length or tile texture. That rules out towel bars, faucets, shower doors and anything sized to a specific basin, and it is why this list is made of things that fit almost anything.
  3. It is still in use in March. Consumables and novelties fail here. Towels, holders, mats and bidet attachments do not.

The gifts that go wrong, and why

Anything sized to a wall. A towel bar is a lovely object and a terrible gift, because its assembled width has to clear the fittings either side of it and you have not measured them. Bar sizing is here — read it and you will see why this is not a guess you can make for somebody else.

Anything that needs an outlet beside the toilet. Electric bidet seats are wonderful and most bathrooms have no socket within cord reach. A mechanical attachment sidesteps the whole problem. The outlet question is here.

Cleaning equipment. See the skip above.

Scales. A bathroom scale is a comment, not a present, however good the specification is.

If you have a little more than $50

The next step up is a warm towel rather than a better towel, and it is the one bathroom gift people remember. Whether a towel warmer actually makes a good gift is answered here, and the under-$100 upgrade list is here.

What we have not done

We have not used any of these. Every figure above is published by the maker and linked under the spec table on each pick, and where a maker publishes nothing — Tooletries on materials, Coyuchi on dimensions, OXO on size — the row says so rather than guessing. Prices are checked against Amazon on the day you are reading and shown with the date beside them.

Every pick in full

5 we would buy, and one we would not. Each carries its Renter-Safe Install Rating, the published specs behind it, and the honest gap in what we know.

Tooletries Tooletries The Harvey Toothbrush & Razor Holder

1. Best bathroom gift under $50

Tooletries The Harvey Toothbrush & Razor Holder

Tooletries · The Harvey · best for anyone whose toothbrush currently lives on the edge of the sink

A silicone holder with published drainage holes and a pouch plus razor shelves, removable and reusable, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Harvey solves the smallest and most universal bathroom problem: there is nowhere to put the things you use every morning. Tooletries publishes it as “a multi-purpose pouch” for toothpaste and toothbrushes plus “unique shelves for razor and sundries”, with “specially-designed drainage holes”.

Those drainage holes are the reason this is a gift and not a gadget. A wet razor left on a flat surface rusts the surface under it; a holder that lets water out is the difference between a year of use and a month.

It is published as “Removable and reusable”, which makes it safe for a rental and safe to give to someone whose living situation you do not know. Read Tooletries’ own surface guidance before you buy, though: the range wants “flat, smooth, shiny, non-porous surfaces” and specifically not “textured, rough, porous, or uneven surfaces” or grout lines. How silicone grip differs from adhesive and suction is here.

Why: Tooletries publishes the range as removable and reusable with a silicone grip rather than a curing adhesive, so nothing is left on the wall when it comes off.

What’s wrong with it

Tooletries publishes no material, no dimensions and no weight capacity for it, so you are buying the design rather than the spec sheet.

What we can’t tell you

No published mounting method beyond the range's silicone grip, which means nobody can tell you in advance whether it will hold on your particular tile.

Brondell Brondell SimpleSpa Thinline Essential Bidet Attachment

2. Best surprise gift

Brondell SimpleSpa Thinline Essential Bidet Attachment

Brondell · SS-150 · best for someone who has never tried a bidet and would never buy one for themselves

A 0.2 in. plate with a braided metal hose and an all-metal T-valve that adds a bidet to any toilet, with no outlet and no plumber.

This is the gift people are embarrassed to buy themselves and delighted to receive. Brondell’s SimpleSpa Thinline publishes a “Universal, adjustable toilet fit” that “installs under your existing seat”, with “no plumbers or plumbing knowledge required”.

The specification that matters is the plumbing, not the spray: Brondell publishes a “braided metal hose and all-metal T-Valve”. Metal at both joints is what separates an attachment that lasts from one that weeps at the tank in a year. Why attachments leak is covered here.

It is “Powered by water pressure alone”, so it costs nothing to run and needs no outlet, and the whole thing weighs “0.6 lbs” at a “0.2 inches” profile. If you are giving it to someone in a rental, it comes off as easily as it goes on.

Renter verdict: SafeNothing is drilled and nothing is wired in. Fit it, and take it with you.

Why: Brondell publishes an under-seat fit with a metal T-valve at the tank. There is no fixing into any surface, so removal is the install run backwards.

What’s wrong with it

Cold water only — Brondell publishes it as an “ambient temperature wash”, which in a cold house in January means cold.

What we can’t tell you

No published install time and no published hose length, so you cannot promise the recipient a ten-minute job.

Coyuchi Air Weight Organic Towels

3. Best splurge inside the budget

Air Weight Organic Towels

Coyuchi · Air Weight Organic Towels · best for someone still using the towels they bought for their first apartment

550 GSM organic cotton in a twill weave with GOTS, Fair Trade and Made Safe certification — three certificates most towels do not carry.

Coyuchi’s Air Weight towels are the most-certified thing on this page. Coyuchi publishes “GOTS + Fair Trade + Made Safe Certified” and “100% organic cotton is grown + woven in India”, in “A twill weave” with “long loops of pure organic cotton”.

At 550 GSM they sit between a lightweight waffle and a hotel-weight plush: substantial in the hand, and published as “drying off quickly and efficiently” rather than as the heaviest towel on the shelf. That is the right place to be for a gift, because you do not know how well the recipient’s bathroom ventilates. What GSM means across the whole range is here.

Towels are the one bathroom gift nobody returns, and the one almost nobody replaces often enough on their own.

Coyuchi publishes no dimensions at all — the sizes are named but not measured — so you cannot check them against a particular rail.

What we can’t tell you

Tooletries Tooletries The Oliver Shower Mirror

4. Best gift for someone who shaves in the shower

Tooletries The Oliver Shower Mirror

Tooletries · The Oliver · best for a shower with glass or smooth tile and no mirror in it

A 6.5 x 5.5 in. shatterproof mirror that grips glass or tile, published as removable and reusable, with a 30-day return policy.

The Oliver is published at “6.5 x 5.5 inches” and “shatterproof”, which is the specification that matters in a room with a hard floor and bare feet. Tooletries describes its “strong gripping technology” as sticking “to glass or tiles, both securely and with ease”, and the mirror as “removable and reusable”.

Note what Tooletries does not publish: any fog-free claim. A shower mirror that is not specified as fogless will fog, and the fix is the same one that works on a bathroom mirror. That fix is here, and the mirrors that do publish a fogless mechanism are here.

ONSEN ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Mat

5. Best everyday gift

ONSEN Sculpted Terry Bath Mat

ONSEN · Sculpted Terry Bath Mat · best for replacing the one thing in the bathroom nobody thinks to replace

20 x 30 in. of USA-grown cotton in a sculpted short-loop terry, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, with a 60-shower trial.

ONSEN’s sculpted terry mat publishes “20" x 30" (+/- ½" on either side)”, “100% USA-grown cotton” and “OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified”, in the same short-loop weave as its towels.

A bath mat is the dampest object in the room and the one most households keep years past its useful life. Short loops dry faster than long ones, which is the whole reason this weave exists. Cotton against stone, on drying, is compared here.

ONSEN publishes a “60-Shower Trial”, which is a useful thing to be able to tell the person you are giving it to.

OXO Good Grips Compact Toilet Brush & Canister

The one to skip

Good Grips Compact Toilet Brush & Canister

OXO · Compact Toilet Brush & Canister · best for buying for your own bathroom, where it is genuinely good

An excellent toilet brush, and a gift that tells the recipient exactly what you think of their bathroom.

This is not a criticism of the product. OXO publishes an “Automatic canister door: Opens as the Toilet Brush is lifted and closes when stored” and a drip tray “with ventilation slots” that “allows excess water to evaporate quickly” — which is a real answer to the real problem with toilet brushes. We rank it well on its own page.

It is on this page because cleaning equipment is the single most common bathroom gift mistake. A brush, a plunger, a drain snake and a scale all say the same thing to the person unwrapping them, and none of them is what you meant.

If the instinct behind it is “something practical they will actually use”, the Harvey at the top of this page is the same instinct with none of the insult.

what is a good bathroom gift under $50

A silicone toothbrush and razor holder like the Tooletries Harvey: it publishes drainage holes, it is removable and reusable so it works in a rental, and it solves a problem every bathroom has. A bidet attachment is the better surprise if you know the recipient well.

is a bidet attachment a weird gift

It is the gift people will not buy themselves and are glad to be given. The Brondell SimpleSpa publishes a universal adjustable fit, a braided metal hose and an all-metal T-valve, needs no outlet and no plumber, and comes off cleanly in a rental.
